Leigh / Wassermann – The Man of la Mancha
There are many good musicals and »The man of the Mancha« is surely one of them. An adaption of Don Quixote worthy of the operatic stage and music which is rewarding for both singers and orchestra alike. If we look beyond the local colour surrounding Spains most famous hero, we have the story of a man (an old man – but must he always be old?) full of self delusion on his way through life.
But is his own personal view of life really false? Surely it is tragic in so far as it robs him of the possibility to communicate with the world around him. But who doesn’t live in his own dreamworld and how can we know that our »Knight of the woeful countenance« is not aware of this?
