J. v. Eybler – Die vier letzen Dinge (1810)
Wonderful music and an unusually dramatic oratorio. Ilia Korol brought my attention to this piece with the intention of collaborating together on its realization with his ensemble Modern Times.
Musically somewhere between Mozart’s »Requiem« and Weber’s »Wolfschlucht«, this composition by Salieri’s successor as
Viennese Court Composer is a work of incredible theatrical intensity, in both the vocal writing and the instrumental music. Despite the allegorical subject matter, Eybler creates unforgettable impressions. The subject matter revolves around themes of death, justice, Heaven and Hell. A piece which lends itself to a semi-staging in concert, or even for the stage. A real find!
