W. A. Mozart – Cosí fan tutte

In 2010 I have the great pleasure to direct yet another Mozart opera. My fourth Mozart staging will be »Cosí fan tutte« for Salamanca. One can never tire of exploring the works of such a humane composer.

The work follows the principles of Aristotelean unity, but that is not the only artistic device Da Ponte uses. »Cosí« is not only an opera about the trials and tribulations of the heart. Mozart’s time paved the way for fundamental social change to come and the opera can also be read as an allegorical social drama in this context. The main protagonists (in this case the men), hanging on to their old moral mores, find it impossible to accept and adapt to change. They are not able to open themselves to new social realities. The conflicts arising from social change are here projected into the private sphere and scrutinised at close range.
